I HAVE met many fine, dedicated and qualified instructors making webs over the last few months. However, I have yet to meet anyone with Ray O’Reilly’s lifelong commitment to driver education.

Instructors, as you probably know, must now have the Road Safety Authority’s ADI certificate.

But for Ray that is just a starting point.

He has studied here and in the UK, with organisations such as the Automobile Association, the RSI, FETAC and others. He has an intimate knowledge of test practices and procedures, defensive driving, and the techniques and skills.

To illustrate: after many years of poor instruction, and several failed tests, I could not sit in a car without becoming flustered and disorientated. Yet after just an hour of “the Ray treatment”, I was relaxed, calm, driving and above all learning.

Apparently all my fears, mistakes and lack of confidence were not entirely my fault. At any rate they vanished after two lessons.

As I analysed our lesson — the emphasis on detail, the prompts to observe, the skills with the controls — I realised that all those hard-won skill were as important as manner and patience.

Ray’s natural gifts as a teacher were born with him. But knowledge about cars, roads and safety were built up over years, even decades.
